ICEOL Director Joins Institute of Medicine Health Reform Meeting

New Options to Enhance Care and Empower Patients with Advanced Illness

June 11, 2009

Richard Payne, M.D., participated in an invitational planning meeting hosted by the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. on June 23. The meeting, planned in collaboration with the AARP, explored new initiatives to transform the culture of, and approach to, advanced illness management. With the national policy agenda emphasizing health reform, this is an important time for such discussions. Establishing common ground on key issues can influence final reform legislation.

Participants in the meeting included leading clinicians, policymakers, consumers, and other stakeholders. Participants discussed the relationships between care affecting those at the end of life and other complex issues, including financing, consumer empowerment, health professionals’ education, and health reform.
